In Karlheinz Stockhausen’s ‘Originals’ from 1961, the people who are labelled as originals because of their uniqueness appear as themselves. Based on Fluxus and action art happenings of the 50s and 60s, the piece organised a network of appearances and departures and once brought together avant-garde artists, everyday heroes and local greats who performed things worth seeing and hearing. Under the direction of the renowned director Andrea Moses, it is now being curated, developed and presented by a production collective made up of members of the DNT’s Music Theatre Youth. The young people are called upon to develop their own vision of today’s ‘Weimar originals’ based on their engagement with Stockhausen’s historical milestone and to realise their own idea of contemporary music theatre. The result is a circus-like world music theatre of our immediate surroundings and the present.
The music theatre youth of the DNT stages a masterpiece of new music theatre and transforms it into an entertaining defilee of very special people from Weimar and the surrounding area. Whether young or old, rich or poor, famous or infamous – the assembled originals create a panorama of our present that grows into a celebration of living together in diversity.
