From August 10–16, SOMAPHON enters its second edition. Under the theme “research through play — play through research,” the festival invites you to a week of performances, movement and sound workshops, lectures, radio art, improvisations, and public space interventions.

SOMAPHON — Festival for Body, Sound and Interactions in Public Space — explores the city as an instrument: an object to be played, questioned, and used as a tool for research — at the same time, an actor: alive, vivid an organism that conducts research itself. Hosted by EIGENHEIM Weimar the Werklabor at Bauhaus Museum, and the Weimarhallenpark, SOMAPHON 2025 becomes a space for playful experimentation — with sound, with the body, and with your own relation to the urban environment around you.

What do we hear when we move through our city? How does our body respond to its surroundings — to rhythm, vibration, architecture, and the constant flux of human and non-human presence? And how do we, in turn, inscribe our own movements into the city’s living composition?

SOMAPHON FESTIVAL 2024 explored these questions through the theme of “Polyphony” — understanding urban space as a multi-voiced field of resonance where bodies, sounds, and environments continuously intertwine.

Renowned and international artists from the fields of sound art, performance, and movement research to reimagine Weimar’s public spaces as sites of listening, interaction, and transformation joined the invitation to explore the city as a instrument.

Over several days, SOMAPHON offered a diverse program of sound walks, performances, concerts, and workshopsin bodywork and movement. These artistic and participatory formats opened new pathways of perception — allowing audiences to experience the city not as a backdrop, but as an instrument, a collaborator, and a living score.

Through this polyphonic dialogue between body, sound, and space, SOMAPHON created moments of shared awareness — ephemeral compositions in which the city itself became the performer.
